Note: | 03/28/1978 Steamboat awakens after 9 years!!!
At approx 10:15, a YACC crew heard & saw the geyser in a major eruption. Heights were estimated between 300-400’. Cars in the parking log were drenched!
Nearly all of Mammoth turned out to witness the big event.
When viewed at 6:00 pm, coarse gravel could be seen all over the snow on the hill, in the Steamboat area. Large amounts of material from the hill were washed onto the boardwalk below. Steam was roaring out of both vents, and a deep thudding could still be heard near the vent. Cistern Springs showed a dramatic change – water level down approx. 2 feet, no boiling. |
