7/6/1982 Graceful – Grover S: Indicator vent is drained, but erupting from 3 spots immediately after Graceful stops, gradually fills + overflows prior to Graceful’s eruption. Its eruptions get more and more powerful (up to 4-5 ft). Graceful erupting grayish water w/ragged play hybrid in appearance between a pool and cone geyser. This probably due to the pool below the vent. |

12/11/1981 - no time noted - Graceful Geyser As I look back on what I’ve written, I see that I forgot to write about the death of Graceful. Sometime in early October, Fred was taking some U.S.G.S. ( I think) folks around the basin so that they could get samples of gas & water. When they got to Graceful, they found that the vent had about tripled in size, there were large caverns under where the rim of the vent was & a lot of large rocks had been thrown out of the vent. It has not been erupting since to my knowledge. While there today, it was splashing some water above the vent, which I don’t recall seeing since it has gone dorment. [sic]
There were no large rocks around the vent within 3 feet. You can easily hear a lot of water splashing below. We were in the basin for ~ 4 hours & I didn’t see anything like an eruption but I’ll put up a marker next time that I’m there. Where is Tomas & Milada when we need them? They will be crushed by the news…. Maybe a sympathy card is in order? Temp. 202º |

8/21/1981 At 09:00 the new geyser described on the preceding page was erupting to 25 feet. The water was much clearer then yesterday. The area within 6-8 feet of the main vent (a) was totally covered with pebbles and rocks. The vent itself was clear of rocks. There was much erosion and new run-off channels around the vent (a). The eruption would start with vent C filling up, and water being ejected to about 6 feet. About 2 minutes later this vent would start overflowing, and ~ ½ minute later the main vent would surge up. The main vent would reach maximum height about 5 seconds after start, and would not diminish until the end. There was no water visible in the vent until the start of the eruption. The eruption of the cave (vent B) would last for the first three minutes of the major eruption, with water occasionally being splashed to 8’ from vent. During the eruption of “B” more water was ejected than from the main vent |

8/20/1981 The birth of a geyser: At 1500 there appeared a water column on the far northern side of Porcelain Basin. A geyser was erupting from a vent 30 in in diameter about 20 yards west of the Collapsed Cave in a continuous stream @ > 15 feet. The eruption paused for 12 minutes then erupted for 11, paused for 12 and erupted again. This time however after 11 minutes it abruptly decreased from 15 to 6 feet and continued to erupt for at least 3 hours continuously in this way. During the eruptions the water was murky and muddy, like tea, and little pebbles were ejected at a rate about 5-15 per minute. During the eruption a cave like vent 6 yards north of main vent splashed and overflowed heavily. And another vent 15 yards west of the man vent erupted along a 8 ft wide crack (No. S) ~ about 6 feet and overflowed between eruptions. This vent would go into a loud steam phase. Tomas V |
