Comments: | The 9:45 eruption of Echinus was quite abnormal compared to last year. I arrived about 10 minutes prior to the eruption and found heavy boiling from the crack behind the main vents. The water level was only 1 ft above the vent mouth. While the boil continued the water level rose 2 ft and the eruption started with the pool 3 to 5 ft below normal levels. The bursts were very powerful for the first couple of minutes – much like a Grand eruption. At least 13 rocks were thrown water was a soupy white. Overflow occurred at 6:40 into the eruption and the eruption stopped at 8:15. Very little water flowed out of the system but drainage was quick and complete {1:40 to drain} |
